Project summary
To create an EU knowledge platform to design, collect, collate, analyse, share and use integrated scientific and technical data on animal welfare, enabling monitoring at EU level on farms, during transport and at slaughterhouses. The project will cover 14 animal categories across milk, eggs and meat production relevant to EU food systems.
Project objectives
- To create a network of relevant stakeholders
- To Define a methodology for standardisation of animal welfare indicators and monitoring systems
- To propose harmonised EU-level animal welfare monitoring and surveillance tool
- Enabling a data sharing and collection framework
- To design a flexible data model of Animal Welfare assessment in the EU for centralised and harmonised monitoring and surveillance systems for animal welfare in the EU.
Outcomes and impacts
- An established stakeholder network to support collaboration and knowledge exchange on animal welfare in the EU.
- Review of existing animal welfare measures, methods, tools and data, including standards for collection, analysis and interpretation.
- Development of a flexible EU data model to enable harmonised monitoring and surveillance across farms, transport and slaughterhouses.
- Requirements and recommendations for standardising indicators and monitoring processes for future EU activities.
